English Global education time: an international network of schools learning and acting for sustainable development goals
The Green Community (GC) is a network of public and private entities established and coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Education, which offers to the Italian school communities support to promote and implement initiatives on sustainability education consistent with the School ReGeneration Plan. This Plan was designed to accompany schools in the ecological and cultural transition and implement the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
CISP is member of the Green Community network and offers a global geo-history educational course focused on climate change as well as a guide to encourage schools to effectively consolidate their economic, social, and environmental sustainability practices. They are both available on the Ministry’s website.
Both tools are designed for teachers and school managers of lower and upper secondary schools; they foster an active participation of students; and are meant to accompany all the key players in the challenge of regenerating knowledge through resources and interventions that help to tackle the complex context in which we live.
Connecting the nexus between the climate changes that occurred in different historical phases to the type of social, cultural, and economic processes that took place in same time spans, offers a great potential for meaningful learning that stimulates the younger generations to observe the relationship between humans and the environment using History as a tool. It helps understanding the present and its current challenges. It is an innovative, stimulating way of studying school subjects, and it allows you to practice education for sustainability and global citizenship.
The teaching materials made available by CISP help teachers with a wide range of practical suggestions, activities and tools (maps, exercises, explanations, evaluation questions), facilitating the integration of the teaching proposal into the curriculum.
After all, to effectively understand the vast environmental impact of human action, a favorable learning environment is as important as the cognitive and didactic dimension. "It is a challenge to which the entire education and training system is called upon to respond" (MIUR, Italian Ministry of University and Research).
The Guide proposed by CISP in the Green Community has the purpose of helping each school to monitor the integration of key local and global issues in the curriculum; professional updating of staff; the adoption of interactive and participatory methods for critical thinking and change; the reduction of the environmental impact; the connection with the initiatives for the sustainable development of the local community. It allows to measure the implementation of the political-institutional guidelines that define the objectives of the Ministry of Education in this regard.
The examination of the proposed criteria – and the related evidence – provides concrete examples of initiatives that each institution can undertake.
Schools will thus be able to highlight the good practices adopted in tools such as the Three-Year Training Offer Plan, the Self-Assessment Report, the budget and social reporting.
They will be able to draw suggestions to achieve further goals in the organization and management of their training offer.
The initiatives proposed by CISP to the Green Community are part of our strategic commitment to achieve Goal 4 for quality education, because education is an objective of the 2030 Agenda, but it is also a means to achieve all the other objectives of sustainable development and to allow everyone to develop the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to contribute to a more inclusive, just and peaceful world for themselves and for others.
Humans change nature. Understanding climate change in the past, present and future to tackle together a path of education for sustainable development envisaged by the teaching of civic education, with workshops, projects, and training sessions.
Climate change is a planetary issue: it affects all human beings and many other living species and every place of the Earth. It is a phenomenon that involves very high social risks: not dealing with it can lead to serious consequences. It is an urgent issue: reducing the risk margin over the next 10 years is essential to keep the phenomenon under control. It is a highly interdisciplinary theme: its nature is physical, its causes are economic and historical, its consequences are social and environmental; and the school is the place where all these disciplines can be addressed. It is a problem related to individual and collective behavior and to an adequate level of information: although everyone's behavior contributes directly to the evolution of the issue, most people are poorly informed.
Kit for sustainable and global schools to enhance and systematize together the degree of economic, social, and environmental sustainability of all aspects of school life, with an experiential approach.
If we think that a change is necessary, we need to reflect and orient our actions and our organizations towards sustainability, taking into consideration their current and future impact on our lives and others, both locally and globally: it is useful for all and everyone, but especially for the younger generations. The school is already committed to getting in tune with these needs.
