CISP has delivered 887 boxes of therapeutic food from NUTRISET to the Ministry of Health of the Argentine Nation and the Provinces of Salta, Chaco, Formosa, and Misiones de Argentina. By working in conjunction with the Ministry and provincial authorities, the therapeutic food will be distributed to treat children with severe acute malnutrition. The operation was carried out through the "Gran Chaco Resiliente" project, implemented by CISP in collaboration with Fundación delALTO and Fundación CISPA, with the support of the General Directorate for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) of the European Union.
On July 27, 2023, within the framework of the Federal Health Council—the act of donation and delivery of ready-to-use therapeutic food took place at the presence of high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Health of the Nation, Dr. Carla Vizzotti, the Minister of Health of the province of Salta, Dr. Juan José Esteban; the Undersecretary of Health Strategies, Dr. Juan Manuel Castelli; the Undersecretary for Social Medicine of Salta, Ms. Gabriela Dorigato; and the coordinators of the "Gran Chaco Resiliente" project, Ms. Beatriz Corral and Mr. Rubén Ruiz.
"Gran Chaco Resiliente" promotes coordination between communities and various institutions for emergency preparedness in the Gran Chaco. In this regard, it collaborates with the Operational Emergency Table in Salta – composed of national organizations involved in emergency response – with the aim of coordinating actions for climate and socio-sanitary emergency preparedness and response in Salta and northern Argentina.
According to Vital Statistics, the provinces of Salta, Chaco, and Formosa are among the most hit by child malnutrition in Argentina. The timely administration of these special foods will strengthen the work initiated by the Ministry of Health of the Nation and the local authorities to reduce acute malnutrition.
Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods
The approach to acute malnutrition has evolved significantly in recent decades. In the past, children were treated in hospitals with therapeutic milk for extended periods, causing difficulties in family life and resulting in a strong disconnect from their communities. The creation of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) has brought about a fundamental change in the approach, allowing for home-based treatment, reducing the need for hospitalization for children in need of such care. The community-based approach leads to lower mortality rates, facilitates access to health, empowers healthcare workers and communities, and allows for more cost-effective interventions compared to hospital care. RUTF is a scientifically proven product, approved and implemented worldwide in over 70 countries. The nutrient density of RUTF ensures that malnourished individuals experience rapid and harmonious weight gain and does not require any additional treatments or supplements during administration.
The donation
The donation made through the "Gran Chaco Resiliente" project consists of 887 boxes of RUTF from the NUTRISET company, each containing 150 sachets, which is sufficient to provide a complete cycle of treatment for a child suffering from acute malnutrition.
