On October 26, 2022, CISP participated in the round table to discuss the Reform Project of the Organic Law on Human Mobility held by the National Assembly of Ecuador.
The reform initiative was promoted by the Ecuadorian Ombudsman's Office (Defensoría del Pueblo), the national institution that promotes and protects people's rights, with the active participation of CISP and other international and national organizations.
Since 2017, CISP has been working with projects funded by the European Union and Swiss Cooperation, and through its own resources, to provide effective responses to the needs of migrants from Venezuela. The work of assistance is accompanied by actions of promotion and reflection on public policies which over the years have allowed us to accumulate sufficient experience to contribute to the legislation review processes, to improve people's quality of life.
“Being able to actively participate in the process of drafting the reform proposal of the Organic Law on Human Mobility is a very significant result that is part of the efforts made over the years of work to improve the situation of migrant people. Furthermore, it was really exciting to be able to express our contribution and receive very positive reactions from members of the Parliament."
Romina Cozzani, Country Representative of CISP in Ecuador
In the context of the regulatory analysis table led by the Ecuadorian Ombudsman Office - DPE, composed of various civil society and international cooperation organizations, the proposed reforms concerned the protection of people's rights in the context of human mobility. More specifically:
- The guarantees of due process
- Compliance with the principle of non-refoulement
- The implementation of system for specific and specialized assistance for boys, girls, and adolescents
- The implementation of mechanisms for the technical identification of vulnerabilities
- Guarantees in national processes for revocation of naturalization
- Reduction of criteria for non-admission processes
The involvement of CISP in the activities of accompaniment and orientation to the regulatory reform process enriches the work carried out through projects financed by the European Union in Ecuador and by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, aimed at strengthening the protection of #Human Rights of migrant people.
