Sustainable and inclusive development for artisanal fishermen in the province of Esmeraldas, northern border of Ecuador
Description
The project contributes toincreasing local and sustainable development opportunities for artisanal fishermen and shellfish gatherers from eight municipalities in the cantons of San Lorenzo and Eloy Alfaro, Esmeraldas province, northern border of Ecuador. The actions of the project are aimed at improving the community organisation for the governance and sustainability of the artisanal shellfish sector at territorial level.
In addition, the project aims to improve the efficiency of fishing-harvesting activities and the quality of the products of this sector in order to achieve greater profitability and less impact on overexploited and degraded natural resources.

OBJECTIVES
To contribute to increasing local development opportunities by favouring access to sustainable livelihoods for people in vulnerable situations (objective 3 of the "Northern Border, a territory of development and peace" programme), specifically for artisanal fishermen and shellfish gatherers from eight municipalities in the cantons of San Lorenzo and Eloy Alfaro, Esmeraldas province, northern border of Ecuador.
Activities
Mapping of intervention beneficiaries, training in associations, preparation of agreements, community self-diagnosis and creation of community investment plans for artisanal fishing
Implementation of safety nets/systems at sea
Implementation of systems and methods to reduce pollution of the marine-coastal environment and degradation of natural resources
Establishment and launch of territorial technical tables on small-scale fishing, shellfish harvesting and mariculture
Study visits and peer exchanges
Provision of equipment and supplies
Implementation of a pilot plant for small-scale mariculture and one for crab farming
Output and results
Improved communityorganisation for the governance and sustainability of the artisanal fishing and gathering sector at territorial level
